Rise in Oropouche viral activities globally

The Oropouche virus is known since 1955. Although its appearance was limited in South America and the Caribbeans before, the Oropouche virus has been spreading in new regions since end of 2023 resulting in over 10.000 cases in 2024. Transmission to humans occurs through the bites of infected midges, possibly including mosquitoes as well.

Signs of infection are similar to those of other arboviral diseases such as Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya. Usually patients recover fast, but concerns have been raised about severe complications and potential negative effects on the fetus in pregnant women.

But further research is needed to better understand potential complications of Oropouche virus infections.
